How to Make Jewlery or Magnets From Bottle Caps

Bottle caps.

Recycled bottle caps can be part of an interesting jewelry design. Paint the caps to camouflage the advertising or bead them to add a touch of sparkle. Bottle caps also can be transformed into magnets for a bulletin board or refrigerator. Use the bottle caps as stand-alone magnets or part of another design. Not only are these craft projects eco-friendly, they are quick and simple to create.

Instructions

  1. Bottle Cap Jewelry

    • 1

File the sharp edges of the bottle caps. Paint both sides of the caps any color with spray paint or acrylics. Let the paint dry.

    • 2

Drill small holes into opposite sides of the rims of each bottle cap. Make the holes large enough to fit a strand of elastic beading thread. Small rotary tools work well for this job.

    • 3

Cut a strand of elastic beading cord twice as long as the desired length of the bottle cap bracelet or necklace. Pre-stretch the elastic cord by pulling each end in the opposite direction.

    • 4

Thread the elastic cord through the holes in the sides of the bottle caps. The cord should fit over the bottom side of the bottle cap. Thread on as many bottle caps as you like to create the jewelry. Leave the ends of the cording open.

    • 5

Glue glass cabochons inside the bottoms of each bottle cap, over the elastic cording. Viscous jeweler's glue works well for this project. Let the glue dry.

    • 6

Knot the ends of the elastic cording together in a double overhand knot. Cover the knot with craft glue. Cut the excess cord.

    Bottle Cap Flower Magnets

    • 7

File the sharp edges from the rims of the bottle caps. This step is especially important if you are crafting with children.

    • 8

Paint both sides of the bottle caps a color to fit the center of a flower with metal spray paint. Let the paint dry.

    • 9

Trace and cut out five flower petals from the foam sheets.

    • 10

Place the bottle cap face up on a flat work surface. Position and glue the tips of the five petals around the bottle cap with craft glue.

    • 11

Glue the magnet onto the top of the bottle cap, between the tips of the petals. Let the glue dry.
