Take components from several styles. Peruse bridal magazines for styles that you like. Cut them out and paste them side by side. Pick the parts of each dress that you like the most, and draw a picture of what you want your final design to look like. You also can visit a bridal salon and try on dresses in that style, to see what they look like on you.

Find a base pattern. Search for a pattern. Read the package carefully to see if it will work with the fabrics you have in mind. Choose a size based on the measurement chart, not the size you believe you are. Choose the size based on the largest of your measurements of your bust, waist and hips, and then take in the dress to fit where you are smaller.

Shop for bridal fabric. Shop for fabric and notions. Buy extra fabric so you will not run out. Don't forget buttons, snaps, zippers, or hooks and eyes. Purchase several spools of thread. Follow the pattern instructions for support fabrics such as interfacing, lining fabrics, fabric cups and tulle.

Measure at bust, waist, and hip. Measure your bust, waist and hips. Adjust your mannequin to fit your measurements. Elegant-Wedding-Dresses says this may be the one day in your life you have a dress custom-made. Cut out the pieces according to the pattern instructions, making modifications to fit your personal design. Machine sew pieces together. Measure the hem, and sew using a rolled hem.

Tack appliques in place. Pin lace appliqués to fabric, and hand sew in place. Add embellishment with pearl beads and clear, white or colored beads. Add sequins for a little sparkle. Add notions such as buttons and hooks and eyes. Bustle the train, if there is one.

Tips & Warnings
Try the gown on your body periodically so you can make design or fit modifications before you get too far.
If you do not have the sewing skills to sew your gown yourself, consider finding a seamstress who can create your perfect gown.
Keep sewing area clean and free from dirt. White fabrics show dirt more easily than other colors.
