How to Anchor a Ceiling Fan Tight to the Ceiling
Proper installation of a ceiling fan starts long before you walk the fan unit up the ladder. Generally, you'll be attaching the new fan to an existing ceiling fixture (an electrical box that previously fed a ceiling light), and the fan will only be as stable as that box. Since a ceiling fan is about the heaviest ceiling fixture you'll ever install, stability of the box is crucial. The box is supposed to be screwed directly to a joist inside the ceiling. If it's loose, tighten it with long wood screws, until it's completely immobile. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Ladder
- Screwdriver
- Screw gun
- Long wood screws
- Ceiling fan kit (including mounting bracket)
- Plastic wire nuts
- Electrical tape

1
Turn off the power to the existing fixture at the house circuit box. Access the fixture from your ladder. Remove the fixture by taking out the screws that are holding it to electrical box. Disconnect the wires, leaving them hanging out of the box. Discard the old fixture.
-
2
Pull on the electrical box, putting all your weight on it. If it moves at all, drive long wood screws through the holes in the electrical box that are toward the ceiling joist (you should be able to see the wood of the joist through the holes). Secure it completely.

3
Screw the ceiling fan's mounting bracket to the electrical box, using your screwdriver to attach it with the provided screws, through the screw holes in the face of the box.
-
4
Assemble the fan unit on the floor, according to the instructions it came with. Carry it up and set it on the top of the ladder.
-
5
Wire the fan by connecting the wires from the unit to the wires coming out of the ceiling box. Use plastic wire nuts to screw together similarly colored wires (black to black, white to white). Wrap all the connections in electrical tape. Wrap the copper grounding wire from the ceiling around the green grounding screw on the fan unit, and tighten the screw.
-
6
Hold the fan unit up to the mounting bracket, pushing the wires into the electrical box as you do. Turn the mounting canopy of the fan unit against the mounting bracket so that the screw holes line up. Insert the mounting screws and tighten them with your screwdriver.
-
7
Turn on the power to the fixture and run the fan.

Tips & Warnings
If the electrical box feels loose and you can't locate a joist nearby to secure it, it could be that the box was improperly installed, without the necessary bracing. In that case, don't attempt to hang a ceiling fan from the box until you've had a contractor properly anchor the box to the structure of the ceiling.
