If your computer did not come with a modem built into it, you will need to use an external modem in order to access the Internet. An external modem provides the same Internet access that an internal modem does. The only difference is that the modem sits outside the computer, rather than inside it, which also allows you to check on the status of the modem.

      Connect the modem to your computer's serial port, located in the back of your computer, using the serial cable. Turn the computer on. At startup, your computer will inform you of a new device being found.

      Click the option to search for the driver manually at the prompt.

      Insert the Installation CD that came with the modem into the computer.

    • 4

      Click the "Search for the Best Driver in Each Location" option and click "Next." This installs the driver for your modem.

      Click "Finish" to complete the modem installation.
