How to Repair a Bathtub Diverter
In a combination bathtub and shower, the water flow comes through the water lines into the tub spout diverter. When the stopper is pulled on the diverter spout, water flow is diverted or redirected to the shower head. Wear and tear with time cause water to spit, splatter, and leak from the tub spout when the diverter stopper is pulled up. This decreases the flow of water to the shower head. If the diverter is completely faulty, it will not divert any water to the shower head. Fortunately, this is one of the easiest plumbing repairs. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove the diverter spout. The first type of spout is threaded and screws on to the connection pipe. The second type of spout slides onto the connection pipe and is secured with a set screw located underneath the diverter spout. Locate the hex screw under the tub spout and use an Allen wrench to unscrew and remove the hex screw. For threaded bathtub diverter spouts, insert a screwdriver into the end of the spout and use the screwdriver handle for leverage to turn (counterclockwise) and loosen the spout. Unscrew the diverter spout by hand and remove it from the connection pipe.

Measure the distance from the wall to the end of the connection pipe, using a tape measure, and write it down. Threaded diverter bathtub spouts have threads at the base of the spout or in the nose of the spout. The connection pipe extends about 6 inches or just about 1 inch beyond the wall. The measurement is to make sure the replacement bathtub spout fits correctly.

Slide the replacement bathtub spout onto the connection pipe. Insert the set screw underneath the spout and use an Allen wrench to tighten the screw.

4
Wrap the connection pipe threads with Teflon tape and install the tub spout by screwing it clockwise into position until the spout is hand-tight and flush against the shower wall.
-
5
Wrap the tips of the water pump pliers with masking tape to avoid scratches. Grip the nozzle end of the spout, turning clockwise to tighten.
