How to Repair a Kenmore Washing Machine Agitator
Kenmore washing machines are sold and marketed by Sears. They're one of the most popular brands of washing machines sold in the United States, boasting such features as spin control, automatic water softening and capacities of more than 4 cubic feet. These washers clean clothes by rotating laundry in the tub by means of a device called an agitator. Because agitators perform so much work in the washer, they are subject to breakdowns. When that happens, repair the old agitator by removing it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Unplug the washing machine from the wall. Open up the machine top to reveal the tub and the agitator.
-
2
Remove the agitator cap. Take a close look at the top of the agitator. You should see a thin line where the agitator cap meets the rest of the agitator. On some Kenmore models, you may also see a small notch along this line. Gently press the edge of a flat-blade screwdriver against the line or in the notch and pry off the top of the agitator.

3
Remove the bolt cover cap, if present. Some Kenmore models have an additional cap that covers the agitator bolt. Remove this by pressing on one side of the cap and then pulling it out of the agitator with your fingers.
-
4
Remove the agitator bolt, using the socket wrench. On some Kenmore models, the bolt is recessed in the agitator, so you'll need a socket wrench extension. Unscrew the agitator bolt in a counterclockwise direction. You might have to use a hand to brace the bottom of the agitator as you unscrew the bolt.

5
Tap the agitator a few times with the rubber mallet. This will help loosen it from any buildup from detergent deposits and hard water. Reach your hands underneath the agitator and get a firm grip. Move your head away from the top of the laundry bin and keep your face turned to the side. This is so that you don't get an eye full of agitator. Pull firmly on the agitator to remove.
-
6
Slide the new agitator on the agitator hub. Replace the agitator screw and tighten in place. Keep your hand on the agitator as you tighten the bolt to keep it from rotating.
-
7
Replace the agitator bolt cap and then the agitator cap. Apply a few drops of washing liquid to help lubricate the caps as you replace them.
