How to Become a Certified Paralegal in Michigan
Although certification is not required to work in the state of Michigan as a paralegal, employers view the designation as an indicator of one's ability and potential in the field. It is also an important step for individuals interested in leadership or more advanced legal assistant positions.
Completion of a paralegal certificate or formal training program does not make one a certified legal assistant. Instead one must meet certain standards along with the completion of a standardized test. Two different paralegal designations are currently recognized in the state of Michigan.

The Certified Legal Assistant (CLA)

Choose a designation respected by the state of Michigan. One is that of the Certified Legal Assistant (or CLA) administered and granted by the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA). Another is the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) administered by the National Federation of Paralegals (NFPA).

Complete requirements and qualifications for CLA exam application. Individuals without work experience are allowed to sit for the exam only if they have completed a formal paralegal training program. This program must also meet minimum standards set by the American Bar Association (or ABA). Experienced legal assistants may be allowed to sit for the exam with a combination of both schooling and experience.

Submit an application with application fee to the NALA offices. Additional documentation such as school transcripts and/or employment verification may be required.

Prepare and study for the exam. The NALA offers a variety of study materials along with a preparatory course. The CLA exam is offered three times per year.
PACE-Registered Paralegal (RP)

Fulfill requirements and obligations to sit for the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE). At present, only experienced paralegals qualify for this designation. Formal education and training is required in addition to experience.

Apply to the NFPA for approval to take the exam. Along with the application, one must submit a fee and appropriate documentation.

Begin preparation and study for the exam. Test preparatory materials can be purchased from the NFPA. Additional preparation is available via review courses and practice tests.

Schedule to take the exam at any NFPA approved testing center after receiving approval.
