How to Seal Around a Dryer Vent in the Floor

Depending on how your dryer vent runs to the exterior of the building, it may penetrate through a floor before exiting the building. Wherever you penetrate a floor, always caulk around the penetration to seal the free space in the hole, which will prevent drafts from flowing between floors and can also prevent insects from migrating from one floor to another. All that is needed is a high quality silicone caulk, which is inexpensive and can be found at your local hardware store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the tip off the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle at the 3/8-inch line. Puncture the foil seal. The caulk gun will have a spout cutter on it and a wire for puncturing the foil seal.

    • 2

Load the caulk tube into the caulk gun, and press the trigger numerous times until the plunger is firm into the caulk tube.

    • 3

Squeeze the trigger with firm and even pressure as you slowly move the nozzle of the caulk tube around the dryer vent pipe. Lay down an even bead to seal the gap between the dryer vent pipe and the floor.

    • 4

Tool the caulk in with your finger if you have some areas that are hard to reach with the caulk tube.

Tips & Warnings

  • Silicone caulk comes in a variety of colors so you can probably match your floor color closely.

  • Keep the area free of any debris until the caulk fully cures. If disturbed, the caulk bead may not cure properly and can become damaged.

  • Clean up uncured caulk with mineral spirits and a rag before it cures.

  • Some types of caulk have strong fumes. Ensure you have proper ventilation in the area when applying the caulk to prevent being overcome by the fumes.
