How to Make Macrame Stone Bracelets
Macramé involves weaving hemp, cotton cords or plastic gimp into strong, pretty patterns. Many teens and older children enjoy keeping their hands busy with macramé. The results can be anything from key chains to bracelets to water bottle slings.
While some of these designs are undecorated, many more have beads, buttons and even soda tabs woven into them. The most common decorations for hemp or cord macramé are beads carved from flint, slate and semi-precious stone. Stones complement the natural look of hemp and the bright colors of cotton cord very well.

Measure around your wrist, neck or ankle with a flexible measuring tape. Double this number and cut two lengths of hemp or cord that measure the doubled length. For instance, if your wrist measures 7 inches around, cut two 14-inch lengths of cord.

Gather the cords together and fold them in half at their center. Pinch the center of the cords to form a loop and bend the loop down and behind the lengths of cord to form a second loop. Push the first loop through the second loop and pull tight. You should have a small loop sticking up from the top of a knot and four strands of hemp or cord sticking out from the bottom.

Push the outermost left and right cords away from the center two cords. Slip a stone bead onto the center two cords and slide it up against your knot. Wrap the outer two cords down around the bead and tie them in a square knot around the center two cords below the beads.

Continue stringing stone beads onto the center two cords and making square knots below them until you reach the end of your cords. Tie the ends of the cords together by bending them down to make a loop and pushing the ends through the loop. Tighten and push the knot through the loop at the other end to close your piece.
