Fringe Directions
Putting the finishing touches on a knit or crocheted scarf, shawl or afghan can be as simple as adding a yarn fringe. Fringe creates length and personality to an otherwise boring project. The longer the fringe, the more romantic and feminine the project will be. A basic fringe is easy to create and can be attached using a plain lark's head knot. This quick fringing technique does not require a new crochet or knitting stitch and can be completed quickly.

1
Count the number of stitches or stitch spaces on the edge of the project you will be fringing.
-
2
Determine the length of fringe you would like to add to your stitched project. Cut one strand of yarn, twice the fringe length, for the fringe desired.
-

3
Determine how many strands of fringe you want to attach to each stitch or space. If the stitches are small or close together, you may want only one fringe, that will give you two strands. For bigger stitches, or ones that are farther apart, you will want multiple strands to fill in the space. Cut the determined amount of fringe strands for each stitch or space.
-
4
Hold the yarn strands together for one fringe. Fold the length in half. Hold the fold of the length in front of the first stitch or space on your project edge.
-
5
Insert a crochet hook through the fold and through the stitch or space. The hook will protrude through the back of your project. Wrap the length of the fringe around the hook. Pull the length back through the stitch and the fold. This will attach the fringe. Repeat the process all along the edge you are fringing.
