How to Find Lost Objects With RFID

RFID chips such as the one pictured help detect items attached to them.

Even the most organized people occasionally lose something that they desperately have to find. Fortunately, there is something known as Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology that can help you find what you need. Essentially, a chip or tag that has been placed on the device can be scanned for by a RFID reader, which then relays information such as the whereabouts of your device to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Move to the general area where you believe the lost object to be and begin scanning with the RFID reader. Typically the RFID tag on the lost object will respond with a beeping noise or indicator on the device itself.

    • 2

Follow the signal indicated by the RFID reader. This could come as a series of audio beeps or indicators directing you where to go.

    • 3

Search for the object that you list once the RFID indicates you are in close proximity to the lost device.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add RFID tags to devices without an RFID chip or scanner and search for those items.

  • Make sure your RFID scanner will locate the RFID-tagged lost device. There are some scanners out there that will only find tags specifically made for the reader.
