How to Take the CDL Written Test for Colorado
To drive in the state of Colorado you must have a driver's license. Colorado requires all drivers to pass a test to prove they know traffic laws and that they can operate a vehicle. This test has two parts: a written examination taken in a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and a driving test. To take the written test, you must follow several guidelines.
Things You'll Need
- Driver's permit (if you are under 18)
- Certificate of completion of a driver education course (if you are under 18)
- Identification that has your name, age and legal presence
- Social security card or letter from the Social Security Administration confirming your ineligibility
- Proof of Colorado residency (this can be a pay stub from a business you are employed by in Colorado)
- Completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (if under 18)
- Cash or check in the amount of $14.

Tips & Warnings
If you fail the test, you can retake it the same day, provided that you answered at least 50 percent of the questions correctly. If not, you must wait until the next business day before you are eligible to retake the test.
If you have a driver's permit, you must hold it for the required amount of time before you can take the driver's portion of the exam. While the written test can be taken at any time, you will not be able to receive a full license until the requisite time has passed.
