Directions for Making a Cape Out of Fabric

Capes can be very dramatic for Halloween or simple fun for children. Kids love to run through the house, pretending they are royalty or the latest superhero. You can help them to achieve this by making an easy cape out of fabric. Simply pick out a fun fabric, or allow your children to pick it out, and sew it up.

Things You'll Need

  • Felt or fabric
  • Bias tape
  • 1 yard of ribbon
  • Ruler
  • Fabric pen
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Pick out a fabric. The amount you need depends on the length of the cape you are planning to make.

  • Square off the fabric. If you do not want to piece the fabric, you must make one that is 72 inches square, because fabric and felt does not come in a large bolt. If your fabric is 60 inches wide, purchase 60 inches in length to get a square.

  • Fold your square in half with the right sides together, then in half again to make a smaller square. Pin the layers together.

  • Measure your child around the base of her neck, where the ties would go. Divide the number by 3.14 and then divide those results by 2 for the radius.

  • Mark a quarter circle in the corner of the fabric on the folded sides. Make the distance from the very corner the number that you came up with in the previous step.

  • Add the desired length of the cape plus the measurement of the radius figured in the previous steps to get the arc for the lower end of the cape. Measure this length from the same corner as previously, and draw a large arc at the bottom of the fabric.

  • Cut along both marked lines, making sure to go through all the layers.

  • Cut one folded edge to make the front opening of the cape.

  • Cut the bias tape to the same measurement of the neck opening plus 1 inch. Open one fold of the tape.

  • Pin the tape to the cape on the right side. Line up the raw edges. Extend the tape 1/2 inch on either side of the neck opening. Stitch.

  • Iron the seam toward the tape. Clip the fabric if needed to allow it to lie flat. Turn the ends of the tape toward the back of the cape and sew them down.

  • Cut two pieces of ribbon to the desired length. Turn under 1/2 inch on one end of each ribbon. Pin it to the front of the cape over the neck seam, 1/2 inch from the edge.

  • Sew the ribbon down close to the edge.
