Explore America's Campgrounds

The Ruger 10/22 has been a well-known sporting rifle for nearly 50 years. First produced in 1964, the Ruger 10/22 was one of the first rifles offered in .22 caliber. The rifle also offers a 10-shot rotary magazine that can be loaded quickly for follow-up shots. The 10/22 is relatively easy to operate and maintain, which makes it appealing to many hunters and shooters.

Items you will need

  • Ruger 10/22 rifle, with at least one magazine

  • .22-calilber ammunition

Pull the bolt handle back. Hold as you press down the bolt lock button, located just in front of the trigger guard. Turn the safety to the safe or "on" position.

Press the magazine removal latch, located just behind the magazine. Push up the latch with your thumb, as you pull the magazine down and away from the rifle.

Load the magazine. Place 10 rounds of standard (not magnum) .22-caliber ammunition into the magazine. Install the magazine back into the rifle until it clicks and locks in place.

Hold the bolt handle and depress the bolt lock button. The bolt will slide forward. Check that the safety is still in the "on" position.

Aim the rifle at the intended target. Make sure that the background behind the target is in safe direction in which to shoot. Line up the front sight with the back sights.

Inhale slightly as you line up the target in your sights. Hold your breath and then click the safety to the fire or "off" position. Exhale slowly, then press the trigger. Shoot your rounds, then put the safety back into the "on" position.

Warnings

  • Do not rush through the loading and firing process with any firearm, no matter how familiar you are with it.

Tips

  • The bolt will stay back after you shoot the last round, so you will not have to manually lock the bolt before removing the magazine.
