How to Become a Notary in Calgary

A notary public's work includes certifying that documents are authentic, and signing affidavits and statutory declarations. Notaries also witness oaths and solemn affirmations, which means that notaries have people taking an oath or affirmation swear that the information they are giving is true.

      Obtain an application form from the Official Documents and Appointments Office. They can be reached at (780) 427-5069. Complete the application form in its entirety. Incomplete forms will not be processed.

      Obtain a criminal records check from the municipal police service. People who are renewing their notary status must also include a background check.

      Obtain a Letter of Support. This letter can come from an employer, association or client that can vouch for the fact that your appointment as a notary is necessary. A Letter of Support is also required during the renewal process.

      Include sample documents with application. Notaries that are renewing their status should include documents that they have notarized. New applicants should include documents they expect to notarize during their service. Applicants must also explain why the services they perform cannot be carried out by an attorney.
