How to Do Graffiti Letters With Spray Paint

How to Do Graffiti Letters With Spray Paint thumbnail
Graffiti letters can be made by using multiple cans of colored spray paint.

Graffiti letters are bubbly, stylized letters that are drawn or spray painted onto a large surface as a form of art. Using spray paint to create graffiti letters requires a very strong and confident hand. The smoother the motions are, the more polished and professional the final product will be. Before painting on a surface such as a wall, practice on large pieces of cardboard and canvas to learn the craft.

Instructions

    • 1

Prop up a large piece of cardboard or canvas in a well ventilated, open space where you can use the spray paint without worry, preferably in a garage or yard. If this is your first time or you are worried about painting disproportionate letters, use a pencil to lightly mark the areas on the cardboard or canvas that you'd like each letter to stretch to.

    • 2

Put on a protective mask that protects your nose, mouth, and eyes. Shake a can of spray paint in a color of your choice and boldly spray the outline of the preferred letter, using separate 'strokes' for each line and curve. Hold the can about four inches from the cardboard or canvas but don't hold it in place for more than a second to avoid dripping. Repeat until you have spray painted the outline of each letter. Make sure the letters blend together well and stay within the size limitations.

    • 3

Use another color of spray paint to fill in each letter with solid color. Additional colors can be used from a further distance to create blending and shading.

    • 4

Use your original color to re-outline all the colored in letters. Finish by taking a new color and outlining the entire word as one object.
