How to Build Your Own Gun Vise
Many modifications to guns can be made without the services of a gunsmith. In most cases, a gun vise is essential since the gun must be held securely while torque stresses are applied to the receiver or barrel. An inexpensive gun vise is easy to make and will work for both amateur and professional gunsmiths.
Things You'll Need
- Large shop vise
- Two 12-inch lengths of pinewood, 2 inches thick
- Hot glue gun

1
Attach a large shop vise to a secure support such as a bench or table. The support must be able to hold the vise when torque or pressure is applied to the gun as it is held securely within the vise.
-
2
Open the vise jaws completely and glue one piece of pinewood to the inside of the vise jaw, using the hot glue gun. Glue another piece of pinewood to the inside of the other vise jaw, then close the jaws to force the pinewood pieces into alignment (Precise alignment is not critical because the wood is only used to protect the gun from direct contact with the steel surface of the shop vise).

Allow the hot glue to dry for several seconds. Open the vise jaws, place your gun between the pinewood blocks, adjust the position of your gun based on your desires and close the vise jaws. Ensure that only the pinewood blocks come into contact with your gun since the steel jaws of the shop vise can damage your gun.

Tips & Warnings
As you close the shop vise jaws, the pinewood will compress and securely hold your gun in place without damaging the gun finish.
Do not over-tighten the shop vise jaws, causing the pinewood inserts to splinter and fall away.
Replace the pinewood inserts when they become damaged, worn or dirty.
Before working on any firearm, check to make sure it is unloaded.
