Instructions

    • 1

Wash the hair. Apply any hair products that you normally use, such as gel, mousse or volumizing spray. Partially dry the hair with a blow dryer so that it is damp.

    • 2

Part the hair on the side. Heat up a small-barreled curling iron.

    • 3

Divide a piece of hair, about one inch in size, near the part. Grip this piece of hair in the curling iron and curl it.

    • 4

Once the hair is curled, wrap it around one or two fingers, depending on the size of pin curl that is desired.

    • 5

Once the curl is arranged with the ends tucked in, secure the curl in place on the head with one or two hair pins per curl.

    • 6

Continue curling and pinning the hair starting near the part and continue down the head to the nape of the neck in this fashion until the head is covered with pinned curls.

    • 7

Once an area of the hair or the head is covered with the pinned curls, spray the area with hairspray. Sit under a heated dryer until the curls have set or sleep in the pinned hair overnight.

    • 8

Once the style is set, take the pins out of the hair.

    • 9

Coat larger sections of hair with a product such as pomade or gel and arrange them into symmetrical waves over the head using the fingers to create a "wave" pattern in the hair. Use bobby pins to hold the sections in place while the product sets.

    • 10

Once the waves have dried in place, either brush them out into a soft, vintage wave or leave them set for a slicker, stylized vintage finish.

Tips & Warnings

  • A pin-curl style can also be created by following the steps above with sponge rollers rather than using a curling iron. Sleep overnight in the rollers instead of the pinned hair and achieve a similar look.

  • The smaller the sections of hair arranged in the pinned curls, the tighter the final curls. For a looser wave, create curls with a larger section of hair.
