Creating a resume for a college student involves several simple steps.

Creating a resume for a college student involves most of the same steps that anyone would take to create a resume. Generally, resumes follow the same format or sequence. Most resumes include contact information, educational history, work experience and skills. However, college students who have less work experience may need to highlight their qualifications for the job in a slightly broader way.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Begin the resume with contact information, including the applicant's name, address and email address, at the top of the page. Use standard and consistent fonts and font sizes throughout the resume, as recommended by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in its 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook.

    • 2

List the college student's educational history, starting with the most recent degree or diploma and working back. Indicate the name and address of each school or college and the years that the student attended. Include courses, awards and grade point averages, if they seem relevant.

    • 3

Pay special attention to the employment history section for a college student. Remember, many students have had work experiences that potential employers might find relevant, even if those experiences did not require full-time attention. List any part-time jobs or internships, along with their starting and ending dates. Indicate any volunteer work in which the college student has participated.

    • 4

Use action verbs to describe the work the college student performed during any prior full or part-time jobs, internships or volunteer activities. Emphasize important responsibilities, accomplishments and how the student worked with others to achieve goals. Try to make the student's work history reflect how they can meet the needs of the potential employer to whom they plan to submit their resume for consideration.

    • 5

List any special skills or accomplishments that the college student has on the resume. Indicate language proficiencies, organizational memberships and programming or software knowledge. Use this section of the resume to point out to potential employers what the college student can bring to their organization if hired.

    • 6

Prepare references, but do not list them on the resume. Assume that a potential employer will want to contact references and have their name and telephone number ready. Think of coaches, instructors, mentors or former employers who can act as a reference for the college student and recommend him to an employer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the resume is printed out, it should fit on the front side only of a single piece of letter-sized computer paper.
