Contact the local police as soon as you notice that your mailbox has been vandalized. This is especially important if the vandalism just occurred, since a local police car may apprehend the suspects if they're still in the neighborhood. Tell the police officer what the vandals did as well as if they stole any of your mail. If you saw what they or their car looked like, tell this to the police officer as well.

Contact the local post office if you notice that your mail has been stolen. The post office may be able to help you in your investigation in this case. Tell postal workers about the police investigation and see what they can do for you.

    • 3

Purchase a vandal-proof mailbox. These are usually made of either durable molded plastic or thick steel. They aren't damaged as easily as the thin metal components of typical mailboxes.
Consider building a stronger support around your current mailbox. Some people surround their mailbox in decorative brick for both security and exterior design. Visit your post office for a copy of its mailbox standards. Most mailbox supports and structures are legal as long as the mailbox is 41 to 45 inches high from the street and 6 to 8 inches back from the curb.

Get a Label 33 from the post office. According to the Nye County, Nevada, Sheriff's Office, post offices carry Label 33 stickers that can be placed on your mailbox. The label states that vandalizing the mailbox is a crime, which might prevent younger vandals from pulling a prank against your property.

Set up a hidden video camera pointed directly at your mailbox. Keep it recording during the times of day when vandalism is most common. If you catch vandalism on tape, you can use it to prove who did the damage and to possibly get monetary compensation for your loss.
