How to Get Food Service Manager Training
The training necessary to work in food service management can be obtained by working in the food service industry, earning a college degree in hospitality or food service management or completing an employee management training program. Food service managers need to have an understanding of every aspect of the food industry in order to be successful. Excellent customer relations, communication skills and the ability to multi-task are important skills to develop when working with a variety of people each day.

Gain experience working in the food industry as a waiter, cashier, host, hostess or cook in a restaurant, hospital, small cafe, resort or cafeteria. Be prepared to work a variety of shifts during the week and on weekends.

Volunteer to work overtime, weekends and holidays to show you are devoted to learning as much as you can about food service management. You may be promoted to management without additional education if you can prove you are committed and capable of taking on management tasks such as overseeing other employees, completing paperwork, taking inventory and providing quality customer service.

Complete a two or four-year degree program in hospitality management or food services management. Coursework covered in these degree programs include personnel management, food preparation, bookkeeping, business law, food safety and sanitation. You may also be required to complete an internship.

Apply for Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) certification offered by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Certification requires you to have at least three years experience working in restaurant or food service management or have a two- or four-year degree and two years of work experience. You must also have a Food Protection Manager Certification approved by the Conference for Food Protection. An FMP certification may lead to additional management opportunities and training from your employer.
