How to Find Your Work History Information

How to Find Your Work History Information thumbnail
There are many ways to find your work history.

If you change jobs regularly it can be difficult to remember all of them. However, you may encounter situations, such as when updating your resume or seeking employment, that require you to provide your work history. Furthermore, you may be asked for detailed information such as specific dates worked. If you cannot recall this information, you can obtain your employment history.

Instructions

    • 1

Request a Detailed Earnings report from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Go to the SSA's website and select "Forms and Publications." Search for Form 7050. On the earnings report, select the "Detailed Earnings Information" for a complete report of your job history. A fee chart is included with the form. Your fee varies by the number of years included in your search.

Contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and request your W-2 information. If an employee pays income tax, the law requires the employer to file employee W-2s with the SSA yearly. The SSA is responsible for sending the W-2 data to the IRS. Call the IRS and ask for all the W-2 information they have on record for you. They can send you a transcript for free.

Visit your local Department of Labor office. Employers are required to file quarterly wage report with their Department of Labor division. Go to the department (see Resources) and ask for a record of the employers who have reported wages for you. They can provide you with a complete listing.

Hire a background check company to perform a check on you. The background check will state your complete work history. The fees and delivery time vary by company and some providers can produce results instantly.

Contact your previous employers because they may still have your personnel records on file. Your personnel records should have your job application and resume, which most likely include your work history.
