A closeout sale is good for shoppers on a budget, with low markdowns aplenty. But there are some things to consider before going to a closeout sale, such as making a list of necessities to help cut down on frivolous purchases.

Research prices. Store owners may sometimes charge you more or just about the same as the original price, even though the tag may say "50 percent off. If possible, find out the original price to see if you're really getting a bargain.

Ask about return policies. While some retailers may not allow you to return your purchases because sales are final, others may let you return them within a certain time frame.

Sort through items for quality. This is especially important if you will not be able to return the items. For example, if you're looking for Converse tennis shoes, check shoes for heavy scrub marks, holes and stains that may not come off. If you're looking for dinnerware, look out for missing pieces or cracks in the bowls or plates.
