How to Change Internet Timeout Options
If you've ever had your Internet connection time out when you were working on something important then you know how frustrating that can be. It can totally disrupt your train of thought if you are working online on an article or downloading your manuscript to your publisher for example. It's relatively easy though to change your Internet timeout options and once you do this will prevent those unexpected timeouts during critical online work.

Click on "Start" then "Run." Type "regedit" in the box and click on "Browse."

Locate this key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings" in the registry and click on it.

Go to the "Edit" menu and select "New" and then "DWord Value."

Type the words "KeepAliveTimeout" where indicated and then press the "Enter" button.

Click on the "Edit" menu again and then select "Modify" by clicking on it as well.

Choose the timeout value you want and convert it to milliseconds. For example 3 minutes would be 180000. You can go to Calculateme.com where you can type in the amount of minutes you want and then click on "Convert to Milliseconds" if you don't want to do the conversion by hand.

Close and restart Internet Explorer.

Open your Mozilla Firefox browser and then open a new tab.

Type "about:config" in the web browser window. You'll get a message that says "This might void your warranty." Ignore it and click on "I'll be careful, I promise."

Look for "network.http.keep-alive" in the list that comes up. When you find it, right click on it and then click "toggle" to switch it to "False."

Shut down and restart Mozilla Firefox.

Following these steps will modify your registry so keep in mind it's a good idea to back up your registry first so you can switch back to it if you need to.
