How to Remove Dents From Hubcaps

How to Remove Dents From Hubcaps thumbnail
A car's hubcaps stand out for all to see.

There are many decorative parts of a car that appeal to the eye, but none is so obvious as the hubcaps placed on the wheels. Hubcaps are subject to all of the indignities that come from being so close to the ground, and getting dented is something that can't be avoided. You can remove dents from a hubcap to restore its look and keep your car from appearing damaged. A hardware tool, some supplies from a drugstore and persistence are all that is needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft cloth
  • Towel
  • Denture cleanser tablet
  • Drinking glass
  • Rubber-gripped putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a drinking glass half full with tap water. Drop a denture cleanser tablet into the drinking glass.

    • 2

Dip the soft cloth into the drinking glass. Wipe off the outside of the hubcap with the soft cloth to make the dent more visible. Dip the soft cloth into the drinking glass again. Wipe off the inside of the hubcap with the soft cloth to make the dent more visible.

    • 3

Put the towel on a table. Put the hubcap onto the towel face down.

    • 4

Hold the hubcap down on the towel with your left hand (reverse this for "lefties"). Place the rubber gripped handle of the putty knife against the center of the "nipple" of the dent.

    • 5

Push the putty knife down onto the dent. Continue pushing until the dent has pushed outward. Turn the hubcap over and inspect the dent. Repeat the process as needed until the dent has been pushed outward and is flush with the original shape of the hubcap.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always use work gloves and protective goggles when working on a hubcap.

  • Never use a power tool to remove a dent from a hubcap. There is too much force being applied to control it as effectively as when using your hands on a tool manually.
