How to Change the Player Number on the XBox 360 Wireless Controller

Save

The Xbox 360's wireless controllers offer greater flexibility when you're playing games because you're not limited by a cord. Unfortunately, when you want to change the controller's port--indicating which controller is assigned to which player number--you must reprogram the controllers in the proper order. Compared to simply "swapping plugs," this can be tedious, but it's not too much trouble. Each wireless controller is set with a quadrant on the Xbox ring of light; the order in which they are programmed dictates the player number.

  • Turn on your Xbox 360. Press and hold the "Guide" button in the center of your wireless controller until prompted to turn it off. Select "OK."

  • Press and hold the "Guide" button on each additional wireless controller you have programmed to your Xbox 360 one at a time. Turn off each controller.

  • Press and hold the "Guide" button on the wireless controller you want to set as "Player One." Wait until the controller's green light turns on, then press the "Connect" button on your Xbox 360, followed by the "Connect" button on your wireless controller.

  • Repeat the process to program up to four wireless controllers. Program them using the same method, in the order you want them to be to be numbered (controller two=player two; controller three=player three; controller four=player four).
