How to Prevent Ear Pain When Flying

• Over-the-counter decongestant
• Chewing gum
• Cough drops

Instructions

1. Take an over-the-counter decongestant 30 minutes before your flight takes off. It will dry up mucus, which is crucial since congestion can block an ear tube, making it impossible for your ear to equalize cabin pressure.

2. Chew gum or suck on a cough drop throughout the flight. This allows air to flow through the middle ear, minimizing pain due to airplane ear.

3. Stay awake throughout your flight. When sleeping, you will swallow less frequently, which is necessary for ear pressure balance.
