Check for any complaints on the contractor with the Better Business Bureau. Do this by visiting the bureau's website and entering your Zip code. Click on the orange “Check Out A Business Or Charity” button. Enter the name of the contractor and click “Search.” If there have been any complaints with the Better Business Bureau you will see them listed.

Contact your state's department of Consumer Affairs or Consumer Protection to inquire about complaints on your contractor. The exact name of the department varies by state. Locate yours by going to the government website portal for your state, such as www.ct.gov for Connecticut, and do a site search for “consumer affairs” or “consumer protection” in the site search box. This will bring up the link or the page for the consumer affairs or consumer protection department. Then click on the “Contact Us” link to get a contact number.

Sign up for an account on a consumer review site, such as Angie's List or ViewPoints, to look for reviews or complaints on your contractor. Some sites, such as Angie's List, charge fees for an account. The fee vary depending on location and are based on Zip code.
