Colorado real estate agents must satisfy requirements before being granted a license.

Every state has passed some form of legislation that lays out the requirements necessary to become a real estate agent. Colorado also has its own set of requirements, which the agent trainee must be willing to satisfy before the state will grant a license. Like most states, agents in Colorado are required to take a specified number of continuing education credits between license renewal dates. But first the aspiring agent must get a foot in the door.

      Download and review all of the information in the Colorado Real Estate Applicant Information document and then seek employment as an intern at a local real estate office. Colorado requires specific numbers of hours of experience in the field of real estate before issuing a license.

      Review the current list of schools in the state of Colorado that offer pre-exam real estate training courses. This list can be found at the website of the Colorado Division of Real Estate.

      Locate the school closest to you, and enroll and complete the training. Under Colorado law, the schools are permitted to award successful completion with the required education certificate. No additional travel to a testing facility is necessary.

      Purchase Error and Omission insurance from a Colorado-approved insurance agency. A license applicant must provide proof of insurance coverage when sending in the license application, along with a training completion certificate.

      Fill out all information required on the license application forms you received after passing your real estate training program, and submit all fees and documents required along with those forms. You must include copies of two forms of identification (Social Security card, driver's license or passport), proof of Error and Omission insurance, copy of your training certificate, high school diploma and other educational documents that may apply, processing fees, and any other information required of you.

      Sign and date the state background check authorization form, and submit it with your other information. Colorado law requires that every real estate agent applicant undergo and pass a background check, which is used to determine honesty and moral character.

      Send your application and all required documentation and fees to the mailing address on the application form, and mail before one full year has passed since being awarded your training certificate.
