How to Troubleshoot Yahoo! Messenger
Yahoo! Messenger instant messaging client allows you to communicate instantaneously with other Yahoo! members. This service is available through the Web and by downloading a dedicated messenger client. To participate in Yahoo! Messenger services, you will need to have a Yahoo! account set up. Troubleshooting Yahoo! Messenger begins with verifying your computer's connection and making sure access to the service is not impeded in any way.

1
Verify your computer's Internet connection. You can verify this by opening a web browser and navigating to a website, such as www.yahoo.com. If the website loads quickly and easily and you have no problems navigating between websites, the connection is verified.
-
2
Check that you have entered your Yahoo! username and password correctly. If your username and password are not correct, the messenger software will be unable to connect to the Yahoo! service. Make sure that your account has been created and verified. You can check this by logging into other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail. Contact Customer Care (see Resources) to resolve any account problems.

3
Confirm that you can access secure pages and servers by logging into any Yahoo! service. If you are not able to log in, you may need to adjust your firewall or Internet security preferences.
-
4
Check your connection settings. Open Yahoo! Messenger and select the "Messenger" option from the top toolbar, then select "Connection Preferences." Make sure that the correct connection option is selected, either by checking "Connect Directly to the Internet" or "Connect Via a Proxy Server." If the second option is checked, make sure that the information from the proxy server is entered correctly into the dialogue box.
