Instructions

    • 1

Determine how you want to file your taxes. If you filed in Canada the previous year, the Canada Revenue Agency should have sent you an income tax package. If you have moved or your tax situation has changed however, you might want to consider an alternative filing method.

Once you've determined which method works best for your tax situation, gather all the documents that you'll need to complete your taxes:

      1) Your Social Insurance Number

      2) Tax slips which show how much income you made and what income tax was already deducted.

      3) Data which shows any additional forms of income from investments, rental properties, freelance or self-employment.

      4) All receipts to verify any deductions you plan to claim.

      5) Any additional documents, receipts, or logs that will support the information you enter in your taxes.

Complete your return using the method that works best for your tax situation. Double-check to ensure you didn't overlook any documents and that you have proof for any deductions you claim. Depending on your income level, you may want to consider paying a professional a nominal fee to review your return prior to submitting it.

Photocopy or print out a copy of your tax return and keep it on file in a safe place along with all the documentation you used to create the return. If you filed via telephone or computer ensure that you write down any verification codes you received after filing.
