How to Repair a Sagging Garage Roof

Like the sloping back of an aging horse, a sagging garage roof line can make an otherwise safe and useful space appear dangerous and useless. Strengthening the skeletal structure of your garage roof system is often a simple and relatively inexpensive process. It just takes a little time, a few good boards, and some confidence. Once you’ve resurrected the old structure, giving it back its structural integrity and dignity, you may find yourself ready to tackle any project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the old roof system. Check that the old trusses are not rotten or termite-infested. If the old trusses are bad, your simple project has turned into a total roof restoration.

    • 2

Cut enough fresh 2-by-6 pine board truss planks as there are old trusses. The length of the fresh trusses should match the length of the exposed trusses within the interior roof system.

    • 3

Screw the fresh trusses to the old ones at the eaves first and work your way up to the peak. As you work your way up the roof line, force the roof line straight with the fresh trusses. Use a hydraulic jack and pipe extension to force the trusses up if needed.

    • 4

Attach cross members midway up the roof line between opposing trusses to ensure a sturdy and long-lasting reinforcement structure.
