How to Cite Peer Reviews

If you are in a higher educational setting, you will probably have to learn how to cite peer-reviewed articles, which are professional articles reviewed by people who are experts in their field. The most common way to cite a peer review is through the MLA method, which is a widely used format for research papers. MLA gives you a rigid format for typing your research paper citations and works-cited page. You must always cite your references within the research paper body, and elaborate on the reference in the bibliography section.

Instructions

    • 1

Type a citation after the sentence in which you cited your peer-reviewed reference. Place the citation in parentheses after the sentence, but before the period in this format: (author's last name, page number of reference).

For example: Nine out of ten patients did not experience any side effects (Johnson, 14).

    • 2

Type only the page number of the citation after your text if you refer to the same author in a subsequent paragraph. You don't need to include the author's name again until you cite a new reference by a different author.

    • 3

Start a "Works Cited" page while you are gathering your peer-reviewed references. It must be a separate page at the very end of your research paper. Type "Works Cited" at the top of the page in a standard 12-point font, and center it. Make the margins 1-inch on both sides. Number the page as the last page in your research paper.

    • 4

Organize your Works Cited references alphabetically by author's last name. Enter a single space, and type the article's title in quotations. Enter another single space and type the name of the journal in which the article was published. Underline this title or italicize it, but not both. Type the "volume.issue" of the journal. Enter a single space and type the year the article was published followed by a colon and the pages you cited in your research paper. Use a dash if there were several pages. Type the medium of the journal (e.g., whether it was an online reference or a print reference).

For example: Last name, first name of author. "Title." Title of Journal volume.issue Year published: pages xx-xx. Medium.
