How to Make a PVC Musical Instrument
PVC piping has many inventive uses, including as a basis for musical instruments. One simple and easy PVC-based instrument is a variation of the pan flute, a wind instrument made of different-length tubes create musical pitches. Using only PVC pipe, duct tape and a bit of modeling clay, you can create a set at home. Play the instrument by blowing across the openings of the pipes, much like you would using a bottle.

1
Cut the PVC tubing into five separate pieces measuring 6 1/16, 5 3/8, 4 3/4, 3 15/16 and 3 7/16 inches, respectively. The pieces do not need to be cut perfectly to length, but it will affect the pitch of the notes slightly if they are not.

2
Flatten a piece of modeling clay on a smooth surface, and press one end of a pipe into the clay. Remove the pipe from the clay, pulling the clay up with it and sealing the opening. Remove excess clay from around the perimeter of the pipe. Repeat this step for each pipe.

Align the pipes from longest to shortest, with the open ends of the pipes sitting in a flush line.

4
Secure the row of pipes in place by wrapping around them with duct tape. The open ends of the pipes should be level with each other as you tape, forming the top of the instrument.

Add more pipes to create more musical notes. Experiment with different lengths.
The strength of the air being blown over the pipes can create interesting effects. Try blowing softly or hard to create harmonic overtones.
