How to Display Antique Dolls

Though dolls are commonly thought of as toys for children, for centuries they have been enjoyed by people of all ages. Antique dolls once loved by little girls are now treasured by doll collectors. As much as a collector wishes to protect their investment, one cannot keep a collection stored away and still admire its beauty. Placing dolls on display, with proper precautionary steps taken, lets the collector and others still admire the dolls without causing damage to them.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a room, or rooms, in your home which are not brightly light by the sun or florescent lighting as these will fade and damage fabric. The room should also have a moderate temperature and humidity (65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 to 60 percent humidity are ideal conditions).

    • 2

Place smaller dolls in your display cabinet or inside glass doll display boxes. Use doll stands to keep dolls from falling over. These will also help to decrease the amount of dust and foreign materials getting on the dolls.

    • 3

Set larger dolls, such as baby dolls, on shelves, in doll cribs or on doll-sized furniture. Create vignettes using other antiques or child-sized furniture with your dolls.

    • 4

Keep the antique dolls away from potential dangers such as pets, spilled drinks and smoke, which can damage them. Regularly clean and dust the dolls to prevent build up and soiling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Handle your dolls with cotton gloves or freshly washed hands to keep oil from the skin getting onto the dolls.

  • Rotate your collection, keeping some in storage and some on display.

  • When cleaning your dolls, be careful not to use an abrasive cloth on bisque or excessive water on papier-mâché dolls.
