How to Fix Slow Printing in XP

One of the known issues in Windows XP is slow printing. This occurs because the server interaction does not allow for quick communication (as it had in previous operating systems). However, Microsoft has not only acknowledged this issue but also issued a very simple fix to help speed up your printing. If you have a networked printer that is taking a long time to function, try this method to help get things working quickly again.

Instructions

    • 1

Update your computer. In order to fix the problem, you will need to have the latest version of Windows XP installed. To check for updates, open the Security Center utility (in the Control Panel) and make sure "Automatic Updates" is turned "on." If it is, then you have the most recent updates. If not, the updates should begin downloading immediately.

    • 2

Go to the Microsoft Hotfix request page and enter some basic information about your computer. Once finished, a link should appear at the bottom of the page. Click on this link to start the download.

    • 3

Restart the computer. The Hotfix should take effect immediately after the computer boots back up.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer is still printing slowly, you may have an out-of-date driver or a full printer spooler. Try troubleshooting your printer management software to correct these issues.
