How to Age a New Photo in Photoshop CS2 Tutorial

In Photoshop CS2, it is simple to make a new photo appear as if it were very old, for creative scrapbook photos, company posters, school events or just because it is a lot of fun to do. Making a new photograph appear like an old sepia-tone picture will provide an instant romantic flair.

Instructions

  1. Sepia Tone Action

    • 1

      Open a photograph in Photoshop.

    • 2

Click on the menu item "Window" and choose "Actions."

    • 3

Choose the action named "Sepia Toning (layer)" from the list of default Photoshop actions.

    • 4

At the bottom of the "Actions" tab, click on the "Play" button.

    • 5

An automatic Photoshop action will create a new layer on top of your original photograph. This is your sepia tone, looking very much like an antique photograph, yellowed and browned by age.

    • 6

If you are satisfied with the results of the "Sepia Toning (layer)" action, flatten the photograph by choosing the menu item "Layer" and selecting "Flatten Image" and saving your photograph with a new file name.

    • 7

Photoshop will include an "Adjustment Layer" on top of the new layer. Before flattening the photograph, you may adjust the look of the sepia toning by double-clicking on the adjustment layer and changing the "Hue," "Saturation" and "Lightness" of the photo.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is always best to first "Save As" to create a working copy of the original photograph, and experimentation in Photoshop is always fun, as so many varied effects are possible by even minor adjustments to the "Sepia Toning (layer)" action.
