How to Repair Armstrong Vinyl Flooring

Armstrong makes a popular brand of vinyl flooring that is known for its durability, colorful patterns and quality. Unless you are extremely careful, vinyl flooring will eventually become damaged because of falling objects, scratches from moving furniture, or just regular wear and tear. Armstrong vinyl floors come in sheet and tiles. Many tiles can be repaired if the damage is very slight, such as a nick or small tear. Instructions

    • 1

Place a towel on the damaged tile and a warm electric iron on the towel. Leave the iron on the area for a minute or two to soften the adhesive under the tile.

    • 2

Insert a putty knife at the edge of the tile and pry it out.

    • 3

Scrape off the old floor adhesive with a paint scraper or putty knife. Scrape until the surface of the floor is clean and flat.

    • 4

Check to make sure the new piece of tile fits into the area that you just removed.

    • 5

Apply a new water-base adhesive to the floor with a putty knife. Smooth over the area with a trowel.

    • 6

Place a towel on the new piece of tile and heat it with the iron.

    • 7

Place the new piece of tile on the floor. Press it into place and cover it with a heavy object for 24 hours.

    • 8

Apply a joint sealer between the tiles after waiting 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also cut the tile with a utility knife before prying it out with a putty knife. Some tiles have a self-adhesive on the back. Simply remove the sheet on its back and place the tile in place after removing the old adhesive from the floor.

  • Ventilate the room while applying the adhesive.
