How to Configure a PC to Switch to a Router

Some home networks are set up with a static IP address. Static IP addresses are permanent configurations and allow computers to communicate. Many common brand routers come preconfigured with dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), which is used to dynamically assign IP addresses to the machine each time a connection is made. If Windows is configured with a static IP address with a router present, you may lose connectivity with the network until you reconfigure the settings. You can do this in the Control Panel's network connection settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel." In the Control Panel, double-click the "Network Connections" icon.

    • 2

Double-click the "Local Area Connection" icon. This opens a properties window where you can edit the settings of your network card. Click the "General" tab. Click "TCP/IP" and click the "Properties" button.

    • 3

Select "Obtain an IP address automatically." This configuration sets the computer to obtain an IP address from your router. When this happens, the router assigns an IP, DNS configurations and a default gateway, which are used to enable your Internet and network connection.

    • 4

Click the "OK" button and reboot the machine. The next time you log in, the machine automatically uses the router instead of the static IP address.
