How to Repair an Oxygen Sensor on a Saturn Auto

The oxygen sensor on your Saturn monitors how much oxygen is in the exhaust. The sensor sends an electrical signal to the engine control module, which then sends an electrical signal to the fuel injectors telling them how much fuel to inject. If the oxygen sensor has failed, the engine control module will not be able to accurately calculate fuel injector pulse width modulation; it will inject an excess amount of fuel, causing the fuel mileage to decrease and the engine to run inefficiently.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety glasses
  • Ratchet
  • Oxygen sensor socket
  • New oxygen sensor
  • Anti-seize lubricant

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the hood and prop.

    • 2

Disconnect the electrical connector from the oxygen sensor. To do that, press down on the tab of the connector and pull out.

    • 3

Place an oxygen sensor socket on your ratchet and loosen the oxygen sensor.

    • 4

Thread the new oxygen sensor into the exhaust manifold and tighten with a ratchet.

    • 5

      Re-connect the electrical connector.

    • 6

      Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place anti-seize lubricant onto the oxygen sensor to facilitate removal of the oxygen sensor the next time it has to be removed.

  • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from injury.
