How to Reduce Wind Noise in a Motorcycle Helmet

Motorcycle helmets are designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, allowing the wearer's head to move easily through the air at speed. One of the many problems associated with these helmets is the presence of noise generated by the high speed flow of air. While wind noise does not affect the protective performance of a helmet, some motorcyclists prefer a quieter helmet. Reducing wind noise can be done by following a few simple steps. However, some helmets are inherently more likely to be affected by wind noise, such as racing-oriented helmets which place function over comfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the fit of your helmet. Ensuring that your helmet is sized properly for your head can go a long way in preventing wind noise. A larger helmet can allow air to enter through gaps between your head and the helmet's liner, creating excessive noise as the air travels around your helmet. A properly-fitted helmet will reduce the amount of gaps that air can enter, reducing the noise level drastically.

    • 2

Install a chin curtain. Some helmet manufacturers offer a slip in "curtain" or spoiler that fits into the bottom of the helmet's chin bar, preventing air from entering and creating internal wind noise.

    • 3

Check the face shield's sealing gasket for signs of damage. A torn or broken gasket will allow air to seep in through the face shield. If the gasket is torn, contact your helmet manufacturer to obtain a new gasket.

    • 4

Check the helmet's venting system. If you plan on opening the front vents, open the rear vents as well to allow the air to flow smoothly. Conversely, close all vents at the same time to reduce wind noise.
