How to Change a Default Gateway Password

The Default Gateway is the location of your router's configuration page, accessible through your browser. The Default Gateway is usually a set of numbers such as "192.168.1.1" or some similar variation.

Routers come with a default username and password. If you do not change the default name and password, then your network connection is at risk. To ensure your network's safety, you should change the default password after installing your new router.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "Run." Type "cmd.exe" into the white box.

    • 2

Click "OK." The command prompt will appear. Type "ipconfig," then hit "Enter."

    • 3

Write down the address located next to "Default Gateway." Open your web browser and type this set of numbers into the address bar. Hit "Enter."

    • 4

Enter your default admin name and password into the appropriate fields. If you are not sure of the default name and password, consult your manual or contact the router's manufacturer for more assistance.

    • 5

Look for an "Administration," "Account Settings," "Setup" or similar option. How to access and change your router's password will depend upon the router's manufacturer and model.

    • 6

In the "Password" field, enter the new router password in the first field, and then confirm the password in the second field.

    • 7

Save the settings to change the password to your router.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not select a password you will not be able to remember. On the other hand, don't select a password that another person could easily figure out, such as your name or your birth date.
