How to Register With the Embassy
Americans traveling abroad register travel or overseas residence information with embassies to provide American consular officers in destination countries with contact and itinerary information in case of an emergency such as an evacuation of U.S. citizens during political unrest or natural disaster in the destination country. Also, such information provides the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs with details about a person's trip that could prove helpful should that person go missing. Registering with the embassy requires only that you create an account on the Bureau's online Travel Registration website and input detailed information about your upcoming trip or overseas stay.

Tips & Warnings
If you're uncertain about requested information in any portion of the tabbed sections during registration, click the blue "Help" link to open a window that provides more detailed instructions and descriptions for each field.
If you don't receive your travel registration confirmation email, contact the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular affairs via email at CAIBRS@state.gov for information about your registration status.
To contact directly a specific U.S. embassy or consulate, go to the U.S. Embassies and Consulates webpage (see Resources). Look for the country name under the appropriate geographic title, click the link to go to the embassy or consulate webpage and then use the appropriate contact information based on your situation.
Always contact the U.S. embassy or consulate within the destination country or adjacent to it (if the country you're visiting has no U.S. officials) on arrival to confirm that your registration information is on file or to leave a copy of your information and travel itinerary. This action is important not only for your general safety, but also to make the embassy or consulate aware of any "special circumstances" involved with your trip such as an extended stay (longer than a month) or a visit to destabilized areas. In addition, should an emergency occur at home that requires your return to the United States, consular officials can notify you using your information.
