How Do I Change Boxster Oil?

Despite the fact that the Boxster wears a Porsche badge on its nose, it’s very easy to change the oil on it. According to the factory, the Boxster’s oil should be changed at least every 15,000 miles, but some owners may conclude that it should be changed as often as 5,000 miles to ensure that the engine remains reliably lubricated with clean oil. Changing a Boxster’s oil and filter can be done in less than an hour with the right tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the rear of the Boxster with a floor jack and lower it securely onto jack stands. Make sure it is stable, as you will be working underneath it. If you prefer, you can lift only the left side of the car.

    • 2

Change the oil when the engine is warm, though be careful if the oil is hot. Place a large oil drain pan under the engine to catch the oil. Remove the oil drain plug with a socket and ratchet and let the oil drain into the container.

    • 3

Remove the oil filter housing, the black, cylindrical container on the bottom of the engine, using an oil filter strap wrench. Remove and discard the paper filter that will be left on the engine underneath the housing.

    • 4

Remove the O-ring from the filter housing. Install a new O-ring, oiling it lightly with engine oil. Install the new oil filter by sliding it onto the oil filter base on the engine. Install the oil filter housing over the filter by hand. Tighten the filter housing to 18 foot-pounds.

Remove the old crush washer from the oil drain plug. Wipe the plug off. Install a new crush washer. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to 48 foot-pounds. Lower the car back to the ground.

    • 6

Open the engine lid. Remove the yellow cap in the engine bay marked “Oil.” Place a funnel in the oil fill hole and pour in 9 qts. of oil. Let the oil settle and then check it with the dipstick.

    • 7

Double-check that the oil is full by turning the ignition key to the “Run” position and verifying that the digital oil level gauge is reading full. Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
