How to Cut Aquarium Glass
Cutting glass for an aquarium is a time-consuming task that is usually best left to a professional glass cutter, although it can be done at home. Be sure to use glass that is thick and heavy enough to hold the weight and pressure of a large amount of water. If you decide to cut your own aquarium glass, be sure to have extra glass on hand since mistakes are not easily corrected.

1
Lay a blanket or other cloth onto a solid surface such as a table or floor. Tape the blanket down to avoid any slipping.
-
2
Lay the glass on the blanket and measure it carefully to mark where you will need to cut. It is best to lay a long straight item, such as a wooden board, on the glass to mark the line you want to cut.

-
3
Put on gloves to protect your hands and safety glasses to protect your eyes from glass splinters or breakage.
-
4
Dip the glass cutter into the oil, and place it at the top of the glass where you want to begin cutting.
-
5
While applying steady pressure, run the glass cutter all the way down the glass. Be sure to keep going until the cutter drops off the edge of the glass at the end to ensure an even cut.
-
6
Wipe away the oil with a clean cloth, and make sure that the line you cut is straight and even all the way across the glass.
-
7
Place a small wedge, such as a pencil, under the glass at the last inch of the cut. Press down hard on both sides of the glass until it snaps and the two pieces separate.

Tips & Warnings
If the glass will not break with the original cut, turn the glass over and make a matching cut on the other side. Then repeat the step with the pencil.
Be sure to practice safety when cutting glass. In addition to the gloves and safety glasses, it is also advisable to wear long sleeves to protect your arms.
