      Plug your flash drive into an open USB port on your computer. USB ports are located on the back, front or side of your computer depending on the model, or whether you are using a desktop or laptop.

      Click the Windows "Start" menu if you are using Windows and click "Computer" (Windows Vista and 7) or "My Computer" (Windows XP) to launch Windows Explorer. You should see your flash drive's icon. If you are using a Mac, the flash drive's icon is on the desktop.

      Right-click the flash drive icon and click "Properties" if you are using Windows.You should see your flash drive's total memory capacity, the amount of space you have used and what remains. For Mac users, double-click the flash drive icon to launch the finder window. You should see the total memory space on the bottom of the finder window.

      Click the "Safely remove hardware" icon on the system tray if you are using Windows. Click your flash drive and click "Stop." When prompted, unplug your flash drive from the computer. If you are using a Mac, right-click the flash drive icon on the desktop and click "Eject." When the flash drive icon disappears from the desktop, unplug your device from the computer.
