How to Attach Strap Buttons on Acoustic Guitars

Acoustic guitars often only have one strap button located by the bridge. Therefore, to utilize a guitar strap another strap button must be attached. This can be achieved by carefully making a hole in the guitar and screwing a strap button in place. During this process, the application of furniture wax protects the wood of the guitar.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the area on the guitar where the strap button will be positioned. Ensure it is not near the fretboard and that the button is below the underside of the neck of the guitar body. Mark the position using a pen.

    • 2

Examine the screw that was supplied with the strap button. Select a drill bit that is a little narrower than the width of the strap button screw. Drill a hole that is the same length as the section of the strap button screw that will be inserted into the guitar. Wipe off any remnants of wood using a clean cloth.

    • 3

Cover the shaft of the screw with furniture wax to lubricate it and prevent damage to the wood of the guitar body when the screw is tightened. Use a small amount of wax to cover the hole. Place some wax around the edges of the hole to prevent small cracks appearing as the screw is inserted.

    • 4

Place the screw through the strap button. Insert and slowly tighten the screw using a screwdriver. Ensure the screw is straight as it is being inserted into the wood. If it begins going in at an angle, unscrew it, straighten it and begin slowly tightening it again.

    • 5

Place a guitar strap on the buttons, place it around your neck and wear the guitar in a standing position. Apply some force to the strap buttons to check they are tight by pushing down on the guitar body. If either strap button turns or comes loose, unscrew the screw, drill a slightly longer hole, apply furniture wax to the screw and the hole, re-insert the screw and tighten.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase a second strap button that matches or is close in appearance to the one already attached to the guitar.

  • Do not exert too much force when inserting the screw.
