How to Make Security Blankets

How to Make Security Blankets thumbnail
Make a soft security blanket for your child.

Many children get attached to a soft blanket and make it their constant companion. Security blankets are even popularized in pop culture by Linus in the Peanuts comic strip. These blankets must be soft, portable and able to be frequently washed. Make a soft blanket just for your child and it may turn into the object that she has to have with her always.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a square of blanket fabric, 36 inches on each side. Use a soft and washable fabric such as fleece or Minkee. Remove any selvages, or woven edges, from the fabric square.

    • 2

Measure the blanket binding and sew together two or more strips if needed to get a piece long enough to go around the entire edge of the blanket.

    • 3

Pin the binding to the edge of the blanket. Place one half of the binding on the front side of the blanket and the other half on the back side. The interior of the binding will encase the edge of the blanket fabric.

    • 4

Lay out the blanket on a flat surface and pin the binding, beginning in the middle of the right edge. Pin along the edge until you reach the corner at the top. Hold the blanket gently in place with your left hand and fold the binding out toward the right until it is parallel with the top blanket edge.

    • 5

Place your left forefinger in place on top of the fold. Fold the binding back toward the blanket, creating a mitered corner. Remove your forefinger and pin this folded corner securely.

    • 6

Continue pinning the binding until it covers the entire blanket edge. Sew the binding to the blanket using a sewing machine. Catch both layers of binding in the stitch line. Back stitch to secure the seam when you get to the end of the binding.

Tips & Warnings

  • These blankets tend to get "loved to death," so purchase extra blanket binding to replace any that gets too frayed.
