How to Untangle a Gold Chain

Delicate gold chains are a joy to wear, but unless you are careful, they can become tangled. Gold chains that are dropped into a jewelry box or even left out on a dresser can become knotted to themselves and to other chains and pieces of jewelry.   • Gold chain
  • Vegetable oil
  • Lamp
  • Paper towel

Instructions

      Stretch the chain out to its full length on a clean paper towel.

      Turn on your lamp and focus the light on your gold chain.

      Apply a drop of vegetable between your fingers--use it sparingly.

      Rub your oil fingers over the knot, working it into the knot itself.

      Stretch the chain on the paper towel again.

      Use your pins to start picking at the knot by working the tips of the pins underneath the loops and teasing out the lengths of chain gently.

      Repeat steps 3 through 6 until your gold chain is untangled.

Tips & Warnings

  • For very large tangles, consider soaking your gold chain in soapy water.

  • After you have untangled your gold chain, wipe off the excess oil with a soft jewelry cleaning cloth.
