How to Paint Fur on a Santa Hat
Popular during the holiday season, Santa hats are traditionally made of red material with a white trim. You can change the color on the fur trim of a Santa hat with spray paint. This allows you to customize the fur to any color you like, or simply paint it white to freshen the look of the hat. The key to painting the fur on a Santa hat is choosing the correct type of paint.

1
Place a gallon size plastic sandwich bag over the top of the Santa hat and secure it close to the fur trim with painter's tape. Make sure there is no red material visible between the tape and the white fur trim.
-
2
Spread a layer of newspaper on an outdoor work surface. Place the hat on top of the newspaper.
-
-
3
Hold the can of acrylic spray paint no closer than 12 inches from the fur. Press down on the spray nozzle to begin dispensing the paint.
-
4
Move the spray paint can quickly and evenly across the entire length of the fur trim. Do not hold the can in one area for long as this will cause the paint to clump. There will still be white spots visible after this first coat of paint.
-
5
Allow the paint to dry for five to ten seconds.
-
6
Brush the entire surface of the fur trim with a soft bristled toothbrush. Brush the fur in various directions to soften the fur fibers. This prevents the paint from feeling hard and scratchy when dry.
-
7
Spray the fur with another light coat of spray paint, using the same technique as before.
-
8
Allow the paint to dry an additional five to ten seconds, then brush with the toothbrush.
-
9
Repeat the painting and brushing until all of the white fur is covered in paint.
-
10
Remove the tape and the plastic from the top of the Santa hat and discard.
-
11
Allow the fur to dry completely before wearing.

Tips & Warnings
A spray paint handle attachment helps control spray paint flow. These are available at a low cost where paint supplies are sold.
To easily paint the ball part on the top of the hat, remove it from the hat using a seam ripper and paint it as described above. Sew the ball back onto the hat with a needle and thread.
